Low maintenance with an unmatched lifespan

Green roofing with fleece backed EPDM rubber

If you’re considering installing a green roof, you’ll already know that you need reliability from your waterproofing layer. EPDM rubber roofing is ideal for this, due to its high performance and longevity, strength and durability.

Fleece backed EPDM rubber has exceptionally high puncture resistance and is popular in green roofs in terms of minimising the risk of root penetration. While every green roof includes an insulating layer between the membrane and the drainage layers (often consisting of small stones), fleece backed EPDM has an additional cushion.

PermaRoof’s green roof division is passionate about making the UK greener – one roof at a time. We offer expert planning advice, quality products and full installation support. Visit our corporate site to find out more here.

What is EPDM made of?

EPDM is the common abbreviation of the synthetic rubber membrane – Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. It is composed of ethylene, propylene and a diene comonomer and goes through a vulcanisation process which gives it the ability to resist harsh weathering and extremes in temperature.

Is EPDM rubber environmentally friendly?

EPDM rubber roofing has an exceptionally long service life, rarely needing replacing, unlike some other common domestic roofing systems, such as felt. This offers a far more sustainable solution with less waste over time. When the lifespan of EPDM comes to an end, it can be fully recycled.

Rubber roofing can also work in conjunction with other sustainable solutions, such as skylights, insulation boards and green roof systems, simplifying installation, reducing time and providing long term reliability.

How long do EPDM rubber roof membranes last?

EPDM rubber roofing has an exceptionally long service life expectancy of over 50 years. These membranes also offer 100% reliability over the prolonged service life.

This is why it is important to prepare the deck and install the system correctly to gain the full benefit of its performance.
