According to UCAS, the number of construction degree applications is on the rise for the first time since 2008 in subject group K.
Since A-Level results were released earlier this month, the admissions body has noted an 8% increase in students for degree courses in architecture, building and planning - a figure that equates to more than 7,500 students.
Subject group K is divided into two categories:
K1 - architecture, architectural technology and interior architecture.
K2 - building surveying, quantity surveying, building technology, building, construction management and buildings conservation.
These preliminary figures could continue to increase as many degree course applicants are still passing through the clearing process of universities.
Awareness of today's modern construction industry is increasing, perhaps in part to do with the addressing of the shortages arising throughout all sectors by government and construction industry bodies, including the CITB, who are campaigning to raise awareness.
Careers in construction are changing and lecturers believe that work needs to continue throughout the career advisement process in schools and employment agencies.
