Installing 50mm Kingspan TR27
If you’re planning to install the Kingspan TR27 insulation boards yourself, make sure you read the install considerations below beforehand. The roof deck and timbers should be inspected first to ensure they are in good condition. If repairs need to be made, handle these first to give the roof insulation and coverings the best chance of longevity.
Note: If needed, strip back the old roof covering completely to allow for inspection. Check all timbers for signs of damage, especially if you’re replacing an old, damaged covering. If you have any doubts or notice visible signs of damage, don’t take any chances. Call in an experienced roofer or surveyor to check the roof and deck and make any repairs as required. It is important for the longevity of the entire project that the roof deck and any timbers are in good condition.
Preparing the flat roof in advance is an important step and can help achieve the best performance from your insulation. It can also afford the best opportunity to benefit from the superior lifespan of EPDM membrane and P500 liquid roofing.
Before installing the Kingspan TR27 50mm boards, ensure the substrate is free from debris, clean and completely dry.
The boards must be fixed using plates and fasteners or approved insulation adhesives. PermaRoof stocks a range of suitable fixings for Kingspan insulation boards. View our insulation fixings range here.

Installation and planning considerations
[+] Thermal bridging
A drop in surface temperature can lead to result in the occurrence of mould and condensation within the roofing system. This is due to heat loss caused by thermal bridging.
This can be reduced by minimising the interruptions within the insulating layer caused by materials with lower insulating properties than the boards. You can address this by detailing at the junctions and maintaining a continuance of insulation at key points for the best thermal performance.
[+] Vapour control
When working on a newly built roof, Kingspan TR27 should be installed over a separate vapour barrier. The exception is when the PIR boards are used with a sealed metal deck. It is advisable to carry out an independent condensation risk analysis for each project.
The type of vapour barrier required will depend on the method of fastening the boards. Contact the PermaRoof UK teams for expert advice about all aspects of your flat roofing and insulation board.
[+] Waterproofing systems
Kingspan TR27 can be used with a variety of flat roof systems:
- EPDM waterproofing membrane
- Mastic asphalt roofing
- Partially bonded built up felt
- Liquid PU waterproofing systems
[+] Load bearing and traffic
If the Kingspan TR27 50mm boards are used in areas expecting foot traffic beyond occasional maintenance access, such as roof terraces or green roof projects, it is advisable to install additional protection.
Promenade tiles or decking placed on load bearing paving supports and pedestals can provide a suitable top layer for Kingspan and EPDM and provide an attractive aesthetic finish.
Installing Kingspan TR27 50mm
Once installed following the recommended guidelines, Kingspan TR27 50mm insulation boards can last for many years with no loss of performance. Lightweight, large panels simplify a fast installation, which can be suitable for a competent and skilled DIYer.
Kingspan boards must be fixed using the correct plates and fasteners or approved insulation adhesives. PermaRoof stocks a range of fixings for Kingspan insulation boards. View our insulation fixings range here.
