Why Choose a Liquid Roof?

Why Choose a Liquid Roof?

A liquid roof gives a flawless finish to any project, covering almost any substrate in a single coat and curing to form a hard-wearing seamlessly watertight coating. At PermaRoof UK, our P100 liquid coating has been developed especially for the domestic and DIY market to bring homeowners another approach to waterproofing complex roofing.

We know that sometimes there are projects where membrane isn’t the answer. Whether it is complex, or the substrate requires more preparation or simply because you need more than membrane can give, a liquid roof will offer the flexibility you need. In this article, we’ll explore the versatility of liquid roofing and how, for some projects, it really is the only way to go.

What is a liquid roof?

A liquid roof is a waterproof coating, often used in place of membrane for large or complex flat roofing projects. Also acceptably known as liquid rubber, but often PU-based, liquid roofs resemble a thick, glossy paint before curing to a rubber-membrane-like finish.

Commonly found on commercial buildings in recent years, we’ve developed our P100 liquid PU roof kits with domestic and DIY in mind.

The benefits of liquid roofing compared to membrane

For home projects, liquid roofing is a fast and straightforward approach, installed using simple tools and methods of application, making it ideal for DIY. This means that previously complicated flat roofs can be simplified, reducing the cost of the waterproofing installation overall.

Flat roofing with multiple extrusions or complex shapes and corners can make installing membrane difficult or just impossible. A liquid roof can literally reach the places membrane cannot and provides the perfect alternative for these types of projects.

One of the biggest benefits of a liquid roof system is that it can be swiftly applied to almost any substrate - after preparation but without the need for primer, unlike membrane over concrete, for example.

Puncture resistance is a big bonus for a liquid roof if you’re installing an eco-roof system, such as a green or blue roof or creating a roof terrace. A hard-wearing liquid coating is ideal for this type of project, providing a walkable surface that will withstand the placement of furniture or equipment and hold fast beneath the multiple layers of a green roof (to find out more about green roofing, please visit our corporate site here).

P100 liquid coating can also be used with an anti-slip medium to make safe roof terraces, paths, garden steps and pool areas. Beads or stone chips are hand cast across the still-wet surface or integrated with the solution and applied with the roller.

How to buy and install a liquid roof

We have developed our P100 liquid roof coating especially for DIY and stock two complete kits to simplify buying your system. In our online shop, buy a 5m2 or 10m2 project kit and everything is included – liquid roof, installation matting, tools and full instructions.

All you need to do is measure up and select your kit and we’ll do the rest. If your project falls outside the scope of the current kits, just pick up the phone and we’ll tailor one to suit your requirements.

The process of installing a liquid roof is also straightforward. You pick a nice day, with no rain or temperature extremes expected and start early so you can get it done in the same day. Follow the manufacturer guidelines carefully, but in short, you mix the solution thoroughly, roller it onto the substrate, using the small roller and starting with the detailing first, adding the reinforcing bandage and letting it cure. Most projects can be finished with just one coat.

We are here with the products, the guidance and the resources to help you get your flat roof projects done – on time and on budget and looking like you’ve had the professionals in. If you’ve considered a liquid roof, we want to help you.
